Subsea Services: From Conception to Maintenance

Subsea services range from planning and preparation to construction and maintenance. Professional companies offer their clients such a wide variety of services that a client will rarely need to look elsewhere other than a particular company for their subsea needs. In order to provide such a wide range of services, these companies need to ensure that they have the professionals and the tools necessary to complete a wide range of tasks.

Before a project is undertaken, planning and preparation needs to be undertaken by subsea services. This planning will largely depend on the type of project that is going to be undertaken by the company. If a company has been called in for a mining project then equipment will have to be sent down in order to test for minerals in the area. This piece of equipment is called a Remotely Operated System and it allows engineers to roam the areas of the ocean that they cannot. The equipment can be operated across great distances and this allows the company to determine whether the area can be mined or not.

Designing the Project

In order to begin construction on the project, subsea services need to design it. This aspect of the project can be tricky because it requires a lot of calculation and creative thinking. The calculations have to be correct or the entire project could fail.

Gathering all of the necessary equipment is the next step toward completing the project. Large engineering companies will usually have offices around the world so that they can access different locations with their equipment and technology but this is not the case with every company. Companies that do not have the equipment on hand will have to seek it out. Since this equipment is very specialized, it is important companies to make connections with those that sell or loan these items out.

Construction of the Project

Constructing the project is the next step. This will involve a lot of manpower and equipment. The construction phase will usually go ahead as planned during the planning phase and, if any problems are encountered during this phase, problem solving will also become an important aspect of this phase.

Once the project has been completed it will have to be reviewed. During this phase, the overall effectiveness of the design will be determined and any necessary changes will be made. Once this aspect of the project has been completed, the project will come to an end. Maintenance and repair will have to be done in a specified amount of time but this will usually take some time before engineers need to be called in once again to complete this task.

Pipeline Installation with Subsea Services

Subsea services are called to sea for many different reasons. One of the most popular uses of this service is the installation of pipelines that run across the ocean bed. These pipelines carry oil and gas and they need to be installed with the greatest care. Without the proper installation procedures being followed, the gas and oil could be released into the ocean through a broken piece of the pipeline. Since the pipes will run along the ocean bed, they need to be of the highest quality so that they can withstand the environmental conditions that they are exposed to.

Surveying the Area before Installation

Before a pipeline can be installed, the area must be inspected by engineers. In order to ensure that the process is completed without any problems, the engineers need to be able to work out where they are going to place the pipeline and the kind of materials that they will need in order to get the job done. The materials that are used are specialized so that they are better able to withstand the environmental conditions on the ocean bed. The materials are sturdy and of the highest quality to ensure that they last for long periods of time and continue transporting the resources efficiently.

Obtaining the Necessary Materials

Before the pipeline can be installed, subsea services need to ensure that they have all of the appropriate materials to begin working on the project. The materials will usually include those that will be used for the pipeline itself, as well as the ship that will carry the load and assist the engineers in laying down the pipeline.

The S-Lay Method

The S-Lay Method is one of the ways in which subsea services lay the pipelines along the ocean bed. The name of the method is called so because of the pattern that the pipes make as they are installed. This method is very popular because it does not take very long and it allows the pipes to be installed at greater depths.

Engineers will usually begin installing these pipelines by welding shorter pieces of pipeline together. As they weld these smaller pieces they will begin dropping it into the ocean. As the ship begins to move forward, the pipe will grow in length and eventually touch the ocean bed. The engineers will then continue to weld all of the pieces together until the entire pipeline is complete.

Once the pipeline has been installed, it is important to ensure that the line is inspected and maintained on a regular basis. If there are any problems with the pipeline then this needs to be rectified as soon as possible.

Why Study Engineering

There are many reasons why people will choose to go into engineering.  It offers some fantastic opportunities and the remuneration can be quite significant.  There are also many different types of engineering that you can specialise in such as civil engineering, subsea engineering, mechanical engineering and many more.  You will definitely be able to find a field that you can excel at.  While there are many opportunities when it comes to engineering, it is important to determine whether it is right for you.  You need to decide if it is something that interests you and if you will be able to succeed in this industry.
If you wanted to go into electrical, aircraft or environmental engineering then you would probably need to take science and maths.  Because the main role of an engineer is to design things and study how they work, it is important to be able to understand the concept of designs.  That is how maths and science can help.  If you want to take engineering at university then it would be a good idea to find out what subjects you will need to study and make sure you put every effort into getting the best grade you possibly can.

If you think you might like to go on to a career in engineering but are not really sure, then it might be wise to volunteer for work experience at an engineering company.  There are so many different sectors that you could try your hand at such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, pharmaceutical engineering, subsea engineering, civil engineering or chemical engineering for example.
Engineering is a tough job and you require a lot of skill but if you can get into this profession, you will reap the rewards.

Products from HPHT Drilling: Petrol

Drilling for oil and natural gas has been part of the world landscape for generations. In fact, it's so commonplace in our modern world that most people don't give it a second thought until an accident occurs. Things like the BP oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, and the Exxon Valdez accident in Alaska always seem to reignite the smouldering flame of disagreement over whether or not mankind ought to be drilling engineering for fossil fuels. HPHT drilling, which is becoming more and more widespread in the petroleum industry, is sparking controversies of its own. But without such drilling we would be left void of some our most important products. One of those products is petrol.

Petrol has dozens of commercial and industrial uses, but it's primarily used as a solvent or a fuel for internal combustion engines. Also known as gasoline, petrol accounts for nearly all of the fuel used in automobiles, lorries, planes, ships and so on. In fact, the entire transportation industry relies so heavily on petrol it would be difficult to keep the world moving without it.

While auto makers and engine builders continue to look for new sources of fuel, progress has been slow and often times unfruitful. Energy sources such as electricity and hydrogen are in the final stages of development before going into mass production. But even these two sources require some means to produce them.

For example, we could convert the entire world's transportation system to electricity, but that electricity still must be produced. Wind, water, and solar power combined cannot produce enough electricity to meet the world's current electricity needs, let alone keep electric vehicles continually moving. Therefore, power plants that run on fossil fuels are still necessary to the equation.

Petroleum products harvested via HPHT drilling are such an integral part of industrialized society that to suggest we simply stop using them is an oversimplification of a perceived problem. Without petrol the world's economies would be devastated. Without the ability to safely and efficiently move products from one end of the earth to the other, the world would be returned to the horse-and-buggy days of local economies and a largely agricultural-based world. While that may appeal to some environmental idealists, it is not a reality most of the industrialized world favours.

Petrol is just one example of how petroleum products dominate our world. Thanks to HPHT drilling, we have access to plentiful oil and gas reserves deep in the earth's surface, both on land and under water. And as oil companies continue to drill, the world continues to hum along on the road to expanded economies and a better life for all of mankind.

How Does A Company Get ISO 14001 Accreditation?

For a company to get an ISO 14001 accreditation it must set in place an environmental management scheme as outlined in the ISO guidelines. This scheme must be implemented and results must be able to be demonstrated to the auditors. These assessments have to be made by a company that is approved to grant ISO 14001 accreditation. There are some companies who will charge a fixed fee, regardless of how many assessments need to be done. Each assessment is a multi-stage process.

The first stage is a document review. The auditor will study EMS plan to see how it compares with the official ISO 14001 standards. If this comparison is not favourable, the assessment will go no further, since any implementation will be of a flawed scheme.

The next stage, which is optional, is a pre-assessment. This come in a couple of forms, the first being a purely document based assessment. It will determine if you properly understand and have applied the ISO 14001 standard. The second is like a trial run of the real assessment. Key personnel will be interviewed and the implementation of the plan will be examined so that any weaknesses can be weeded out. These need to be corrected before the final stage, which is the real ISO 14001 assessment. This can only take place after a completed cycle of internal audits has been completed and the results formally reviewed by the management team. This documentation will be subject to scrutiny in the assessment. It should also address the issue of communication, how aware have the company made its employees about the EMS.

The assessment itself will come in two parts. The first part will examine the company’s state of preparedness and will involve the lead auditor signing off on the document review as well as inspecting the plant, both inside and out. The auditor will check that the company has all the correct environmental licences and permits and review the companies identified environmental impacts. He will also interview some of the personnel who hold key positions.

In the second part, the auditor will check on how extensive the implementation of the Environmental Management scheme is and it effectiveness. This is where he will scrutinise the records of the internal audits and the minutes and notes of the management reviews. He will also interview quite a few of the personnel, to determine their awareness of the EMS. This could involve people from all positions, from management down to cleaners.

If your assessment was successful, the certificates will be issue to the company. At this point any relevant organisations should be informed that the company now holds certification; it should be checked with the assessing company whether they will do this or if you need to take care of it yourself.

The challenging HPHT bailed out by new technology

New unique challenges are addressed in many of the industries due to High Pressure and High Temperature conditions which are hard to overcome in oil and gas reservoirs. HPHT conditions are most often very hazardous such as highly corrosive gases and liquids at high temperature and pressure. Especially in HPHT deep water drilling projects the risk can be very highly critical and difficult.

As it is a main role of each and every industry to take up the challenge of facing the HPHT environment, the engineering technology gave hand inventing a new technology termed as HPHT. When get into a project related to HPHT, there are high possibilities that many new problems which might not have been predicted during the project designing will come across in the on going project. And these challenges will have to be battled off in the mid of the project with high technology and new constructions and designing.

HPHT technology is a top most solution in so many fields and HPHT technology itself has opened a wide range of jobs. As the productions related to the HPHT technology increase day by day due to its demand in drilling, the need of labor force as well as production are highly stimulated and motivated. Many companies day to day turn out with so many new productions that could withhold in the HPHT environment. Day by day new designs and models are added more and more into the HPHT tools and equipments. The equipments which were used in HPHT conditions used in the early days are no longer in use due to the new inventions today. More consideration is given to effective drilling in HPHT and designing. Another challenge in using these highly integrated and designed equipments is that it needs well experienced and advanced engineers to operate those equipments to get the best out of them.
